beIN Sports Media Network entered the European television rights market in June 2011 by purchasing a batch of live French Ligue 1 football matches from 2012 to 2016 for € 90 million per year. The deal made them top joint football broadcasters in France alongside historic long-term rights holder Canal +. The TV broadcaster also acquired the pay-TV rights for the Champions League, the Europa League from 2012 to 2015, Euro 2012, and Euro 2016 in France. France was targeted as Al Jazeera's first entry into Europe due to the fact that there were no dedicated sports channels, unlike the UK1.

The name “beIN Sport” was unveiled in early 20122. According to Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, director of Al Jazeera Sports, the name “symbolizes the spirit of two channels aiming to broadcast the biggest events live and exclusively”.

The former director of Canal +, Charles Biétry was hired by Al Jazeera to launch the channels. In the beginning, the channels were available from all cable and IPTV providers and some satellite service providers. CanalSat - owned by Canal + Group - refused to carry the channels from March 2012.

beIN Sports 1 was launched on June 1, 2012: just in time to broadcast Euro 20124. While beIN Sports 2 was launched on July 27, 20125 just in time to broadcast the first day of the 2012 French Ligue 2 season, and before the start of the 2012-13 Ligue 1 season.

On December 31, 2013, Al Jazeera Sports was established by Al Jazeera Media Network and renamed beIN Sports6. The company is a private institution created by the Emir of Qatar in 2013.

In 2013, Charles Bietry left his functions at beIN Sports7.

On June 6, 2014, Yousef Al-Obaidly was appointed president of beIn Sports France in place of Nasser Al-Khelaïfi.
